APPLETON, WI- (WISS) – The snow and cold weather notwithstanding, road construction season is officially underway in Northeast Wisconsin. This will begin with closures, traffic impacts, and more on Interstate 41 between Appleton and De Pere.

Starting Monday, February 3, 2025, the WIS 15, County OO, Northland Avenue bridge over the interstate will be closed and will remain closed until fall. Additionally on and off ramps in the area will be closed until fall.

The project is part of expanding 23 miles of the I-41 mainline to six travel lanes. Four traffic lanes will remain open on the mainline during peak hours. The closings will significantly impact traffic to and from Timber Rattlers Stadium.

Diverging Diamond

The new WIS15/County OO and Northland Avenue interchange will be a diverging diamond interchange. Within the interchange, traffic on the major roadway briefly drives on the left side of the road to allow left-turn movements without crossing oncoming traffic or stopping. The DOT says a diverging diamond interchange has fewer conflict points, reduces the risk of crashes, and has greater vehicle capacity.

Wisconsin Department of Transportation

The first diverging diamond interchange in Northeast Wisconsin opened in 2018 with the WIS 441/Oneida Street interchange in Winnebago and Calumet counties.
