MADISON, Wis. (Civic Media) — The Wisconsin Department of Health Services has launched a digital campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of menthol tobacco products.

State Health Officer Paula Tran said menthol in tobacco has had a “catastrophic health impact” on Wisconsinites, with 7,900 residents dying annually from tobacco use.

Officials report that 9,300 Wisconsin youth under 18 try cigarettes each year, with half starting with menthol products.

DHS data shows nine out of 10 African American smokers in Wisconsin use menthol products.

The campaign is meant to highlight how menthol tobacco contributes to the three leading causes of death among African Americans: heart disease, cancer, and stroke.

According to national studies cited by DHS, if menthol cigarettes were banned in Wisconsin, an estimated 17,200 adults would quit smoking.

The Wisconsin Tobacco Quitline offers free, personalized support for those who want to quit smoking, vaping, or using tobacco, with specialized coaching for those using menthol cigarettes.

People can access the service by texting “READY” to 34191, calling 800-QUIT-NOW (800-784-8669), or visiting the Quit Line website.
