MADISON, Wis. (CIVIC MEDIA) – Electrical components, batteries, tire pressure and more, here’s some things to do when the bitter cold hits.

The dangerous cold weather is tough for everyone and for everyone’s cars. Temperatures have plummeted to -27 below zero in northern parts of the state and hit -10 along the southern stateline. With winds whipping up to 25mph, it’s creating dangerous cold wind chills, prompting the state’s first extreme cold weather warning. Early this morning, it was really feeling anywhere from -45 to -30.

The electric components of your vehicle, including those that start it up, can struggle with these frigid temps. From oils thickening and moving slower to lower tire pressure.

Mechanics in the area say they get twice as many calls for dead batteries when the bitter cold hits. The average battery life is only 48 to 52 months.

Experts suggest if it’s struggling to start, crank the key for ten to fifteen seconds. After two attempts, if it still won’t go, stores are stocked up on batteries this time of season.

If your car does start, be sure to let it run for a good 10 minutes. Letting the coolant circulate so the vehicle runs smoother.

It’s not only the cars struggling, but also us. From frostbite possible in 10 minutes to hypothermia sneaking up on you. Signs include shivering, stiff muscles, confusion, trouble speaking and sudden sleepiness. So if you work outside, be sure to get inside and warm up often.
