Kenosha County Warns of Jury Duty Phone Scam

KENOSHA, Wis. (WRJN) — Kenosha County Clerk of Courts Rebecca Matoska-Mentink is warning about a telephone jury duty scam.

Matoska-Mentink said her office has received multiple reports of calls falsely claiming that people had failed to report for jury service and now face arrest warrants, requiring immediate fine payments.

“Absent a court hearing and a finding of contempt by a Judge, the Circuit Court could never demand immediate payment of a fine regarding jury duty,” Matoska-Mentink said. She stressed that official jury summonses are delivered by first-class mail, and court officials do not make threatening phone calls.

The scam calls are happening at night, after court offices close, which should alert people that it’s a ruse. Caller ID can be manipulated to appear as a local number, making the calls seem credible.
