Racine School Board Approves $190 Million Referendum for April Ballot

RACINE, Wis. (WRJN) — The Racine Unified School Board has approved a $190 million referendum for the April 1 ballot, aiming to address financial challenges.

A statement says the proposed five-year, non-recurring referendum would prevent program cuts, protect smaller class sizes, and invest in school safety and security. It comes as RUSD faces a projected $20 million budget deficit for the 2025-26 fiscal year. The vote notice doesn’t reference a continuing reduction in enrollment.

If approved, the referendum would increase property taxes by an estimated $35 per year for a $100,000 home.

The operational referendum in 2025 differs from the 2020 referendum. That one, at $1B, funded construction projects. The new proposal would support day-to-day expenses, including salaries and educational programs.

Meanwhile, neighboring Kenosha Unified School District will present a $23 million non-recurring referendum on February 18 to address its own deficit and enhance safety measures.
