MADISON, Wis (Civic Media) — In addition to the normal December festivities, it’s also FAFSA Filing Month.  In an effort to raise awareness of the financial aid program, Governor Tony Evers is encouraging students and families in Wisconsin to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2025-26 academic year.

In a statement sent in coordination with the Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions (DFI) and the Wisconsin Higher Educational Aids Board (HEAB), Gov. Evers urges students to take action, saying that “pursuing higher education should be affordable and accessible to all.”  He emphasized that completing the FAFSA is crucial for students to access financial aid, including scholarships and grants.

The FAFSA is necessary for getting nearly all federal, state, and institutional financial aid. For those planning to enroll in college during the 2025-26 academic year, it’s important to submit the FAFSA as soon as possible and be aware of various deadlines.

The state notes in the statement that as of November 15, only 47.2% of Wisconsin’s high school class of 2024 had completed their FAFSA applications, which is an 8.5% decrease from the previous year.

HEAB Executive Secretary Tammie DeVooght noted that many need-based financial aid programs are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.

To help families, College Goal Wisconsin will offer free FAFSA completion events throughout January 2025. For more information on financial aid options and resources, visit HEAB’s website or contact Federal Student Aid for assistance.
