Kenosha Schools Review Safety Protocols After Teen’s Attempted Entry Sparks Lockdown

KENOSHA, Wis. (WRJN) — The Kenosha Unified School District acknowledged Monday that a 13-year-old student who attempted to enter Roosevelt Elementary last week was previously on their radar.

In a statement, the district said administrators had received concerns about images of airsoft guns prior to the incident. However, they noted the images involving the teen did not include threats.

“Had any threats been made, administration would have notified law enforcement,” the statement read.

The incident led to a county-wide school lockdown last week as police searched for the teen, who was later arrested. No real guns were found. Kenosha Police Chief Patrick Patton said the boy told a social worker he intended to “scare students.”

Chief Patton, during a press conference, also indicated there were warning signs, including internet searches and other “red flags” that should have been reported.

Video released by KUSD shows the teen trying to access side doors and briefly interacting with school staff.

The district is now conducting a review of its safety procedures and protocols. Superintendent Dr. Jeff Weiss encouraged students needing support to contact their school counselors.

The teen, not being named at this point, is scheduled to appear in court today.
