MADISON, Wis. (WMDX) — Saturday, October 26 is Drug Take Back Day across Wisconsin.

Last year, the US Drug Enforcement Administration collected nearly 600,000 pounds of unneeded medications from almost 5,000 locations nationwide.

Drug Take Back Day provides an opportunity for you to safely dispose of unused or expired medications at designated drop-box locations.

“The best way to participate is by going through your old medications in your storage cabinets, and checking expiration dates or whether or not you take them,” said Kylie Hunter, Aspirus pharmacy resident.

Disposing of medications properly helps prevent accidental poisoning, reduces the risk of medication misuse, and protects the environment.

But throughout the rest of the year, you don’t have to wait for drug takeback day.

“You can do it any day of the year, however we use Drug Take Back Day to create awareness and making sure that we’re disposing our medications safely,” Hunter said.

In Madison, there are takeback events at Elver Park, Mt. Zion Baptist Church Food Pantry, and Warner Park.
