MILWAUKEE, Wis (Civic Media) — A low-flying helicopter spotted over Milwaukee on Tuesday night is part of safety preparations for the upcoming Republican National Convention, officials said.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration deployed the chopper to measure background radiation levels in the city. The twin-engine Bell 412 helicopter, equipped with radiation-sensing technology, will conduct flights through July 11th.

Flying in a grid pattern at 150 feet or higher above ground and traveling at approximately 80 mph, the helicopter will operate only during daylight hours. The surveys are said to be part of standard public health and safety preparations for the convention.

“These surveys are a part of preparedness activities to support security and any potential emergency response,” the agency said in a statement.

The Republican National Convention is scheduled to take place in Milwaukee from July 15-18, 2024. The NNSA’s Nuclear Emergency Support Team says they are conducting the flights to ensure readiness for the high-profile event.

Officials emphasized that the public should not be alarmed by the presence of the low-flying aircraft, as it is a routine part of event security preparations.
