UW-Milwaukee Chancellor Mone to Step Down After 11-Year Tenure

MILWAUKEE, Wis (Civic Media) — University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Chancellor Mark Mone announced Wednesday he will step down from his position next spring after 11 years at the helm.

Mone says in a statement that he plans to return to teaching at UWM’s Lubar College of Business, citing the university’s current momentum as an opportune time for transition.

The announcement comes just weeks after Mone faced backlash for a deal he worked out with pro-Palestinian protesters. The agreement drew criticism from Jewish groups. 

Mone later apologized, saying the university “should not have weighed in on deeply complex geopolitical and historical issues.”

During his tenure, Mone led UWM through significant challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, budget cuts, and declining enrollment.

Mone said he decided to share his decision now to allow for a “smooth transition to a new leader.” The university has not yet announced plans for selecting his successor.
