RACINE, Wis (WRJN) – Gov. Tony Evers has authorized Racine County to lower flags to half-staff in honor of Racine County Executive Jonathan Delagrave, who died unexpectedly Friday morning at the age of 51.

Delagrave, who had served as county executive since 2015 and was recently re-elected to a third term in 2023, reportedly suffered a heart attack while out for a run, according to the Racine County Eye website.

The executive order, signed by Gov. Evers, recognizes Delagrave’s more than two decades of public service in various roles within Racine County government. Flags will be flown at half-staff on the date of interment and as deemed appropriate by local officials.

“County Executive Delagrave was an exceptional leader and truly devoted public servant who worked tirelessly over his many years of service to leave a lasting impact on Racine County and our state,” Gov. Evers said in a statement.

Delagrave’s career in county government began in 2003 in the Human Services Department, where he eventually became director in 2010 before his election as county executive.

Board President Tom Kramer will serve as acting county executive until a special election can be organized.

Local leaders, including Racine Mayor Cory Mason and state legislators, have expressed their condolences and highlighted Delagrave’s impact on the community.
