Trump’s lack of respect for the rule of law and his willingness to undermine alliances like NATO is the greatest threat to democracy in our lifetime.

Bruce Heyman, National Security Leaders for America

Bruce Heyman is the former ambassador to Canada and recently joined Jane Matenaer, host of Matenaer on Air, to discuss the vital role of NATO, the impact a potential Trump presidency could have on national security, and the upcoming November election.

Heyman is a member of the National Security Leaders for America (NSL4A), a group originally formed as National Security Leaders for Biden during the 2020 campaign.

“The National Security Leaders for America is nonpartisan and brings together Republicans, Democrats, and independents,” Heyman says. “We are all united by a shared concern over Donald Trump’s impact on national Security.”

“Is Trump taking a stance against NATO by claiming the alliance poses a threat to global stability?” Matenaer asks.

“Trump’s lack of respect for the rule of law and his willingness to undermine alliances like NATO is the greatest threat to democracy in our lifetime,” Heyman replies. “His misunderstanding of NATO’s deterrent purpose is an aim to prevent war, particularly with Russia.”

Heyman goes on to warn a U.S. withdrawal from NATO would be a substantial gift to adversaries like Vladimir Putin. Matenaer and Heyman’s discussion turns to the strategic importance of supporting Ukraine.

“Aiding Ukraine in its fight for freedom helps prevent larger conflicts that could involve American troops in Europe,” Heyman says. “I have deep concerns about a potential second Trump presidency, and I fear it could destabilize global security and empower authoritarian regimes.”

At the end of the show, Matenaer brings up the significance of voting, including an especially important reminder for Americans living abroad to participate in the democratic process.

“Every vote counts,” Heyman agrees. “Americans need to recognize the gravity of the upcoming election and its implications for national and international security.”

Matenaer follows up by encouraging listeners to be sure your voter registration is up to date.

“The stakes in the November election may be higher than ever,” Matenaer says.
