New Ice Age Trail Communities: Hatley and the Greater Wausau Area
The Ice Age Trail Communities designation from the Ice Age Trail Alliance brings economic and social benefits to our communities.
Central Wisconsin (WXCO, WFHR, WIRI) – Visit Wausau announces the Ice Age Trail Communities designation for both Hatley and the Greater Wausau Area. That includes Rib Mountain, Rothschild, Weston, Schofield, Mosinee, and Wausau. They join 19 other communities along the footpath that spans the state of Wisconsin. Marathon County is home to more than 40 miles of the trail.
Partnership for mutual gain
The Ice Age Trail Community program encourages areas to leverage the Ice Age National Scenic Trail as an economic and social engine. Amy Lord is the Outreach and Education manager for the Ice Age Trail Alliance. She said in a press release, “Commitment to this program represents agreement to build healthy and vibrant communities.” She went on to say, “It is a partnership to cross promote one another and support the community and Ice Age Trail users.”
The scenic trail covers the state
The Ice Age National Scenic Trail is a 1,200-mile footpath completely contained within the state of Wisconsin. It is one of 11 National Scenic Trails. The footpath traverses from St. Croix Falls on the west side of the state to Sturgeon Bay in the east. The trail goes as far south as Janesville. Visitors to the trail will see some of the most beautiful areas in the state. It highlights the landscapes that were carved out by ancient glaciers. Approximately 60-percent of people in Wisconsin live within 20 miles of the Ice Age Trail.
Designation impacts at the local level
The collaborative effort between communities and the Ice Age Trail Alliance aims to promote mutual growth and support. It promises to increase visitation to the area by trail enthusiasts and volunteers. This will contribute positively to local businesses and the community’s overall vibrancy. Tim White, Executive Director of Visit Wausau, is enthusiastic about the designation. He said, “As Wisconsin’s Basecamp™, this recognition not only underscores our region’s rich natural assets but also our commitment to outdoor recreation and cultural enrichment. It enhances our ongoing efforts to attract visitors, residents, and prospective citizens to experience the diverse outdoor and cultural amenities we offer.”
Celebrate with Visit Wausau
The Ice Age Trail Communities designation will be celebrated later this year. Visit Wausau is working on details and community members and visitors will be invited to enjoy the festivities. You can follow their Facebook page for updates or watch their website.
