Madison, Wis (Civic Media) – In a significant boost to Wisconsin’s maritime infrastructure, Governor Tony Evers, in collaboration with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT), has announced a substantial investment of $10 million in grants aimed at enhancing harbor maintenance and improvement projects across the state. It’s part of the Wisconsin Harbor Assistance Program.

The funding is set to bolster the economic development and freight capabilities of the region, with a notable allocation of approximately $700,000 earmarked for the development of a new loading dock and fixed crane at the Milwaukee Harbor. This project, undertaken by Perch Point LLC, is designed to improve the efficiency of moving products in and out of the area, thereby strengthening the harbor’s role as a vital commercial hub. The Milwaukee Harbor has been a significant port since 1835, offering access to domestic and world markets.

More than $3 million is being directed towards projects in Manitowoc, underscoring the comprehensive approach to enhancing harbor facilities throughout Wisconsin. These investments are part of the Harbor Assistance Program, which seeks to maintain and improve facilities used for cargo transfer, shipbuilding, commercial fishing, vessel cruises, or ferry service.  The selection criteria for these grants include economic impact, urgency, and project type, with all projects required to demonstrate a positive benefit-cost ratio.

Governor Evers highlighted the critical role of Wisconsin’s ports and waterways, from the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River, in supporting the state’s businesses and economy. WisDOT Secretary Craig Thompson further elaborated on the strategic efforts to connect transportation modes and maximize opportunities for economic development through these investments.

Created in 1979, Wisconsin’s Harbor Assistance Program helps harbor communities maintain and improve waterborne commerce. Applications are reviewed by the Harbor Advisory Council, which includes members from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, University of Wisconsin Sea Grant, Wisconsin Coastal Management Program, Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, and alumni from the Great Lakes Maritime Research Institute.
