Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos is deploying a new maneuver to avoid having the liberal-controlled court weigh in on the state’s electoral maps: writing new ones. At 3am Tuesday morning, Vos and the Assembly Republicans drafted legislative that would be akin to “Iowa Style Nonpartisan Redistricting”, then they held a press conference about it that same day, with no plans to give it a public hearing before they vote on it on Thursday.

A Tale of Two Impeachments (Hour 1)

When you look at the facts surrounding the impeachment trial of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton – it makes sense. Since taking office in 2015, Paxton has been beset by a series of scandals. He remains under indictment on securities fraud charges and faces an additional federal investigation after former staffers accused him of accepting bribes and abusing his office. It was his request for $3.3 million in state funds for a settlement with those whistleblowers that prompted the state House GOP to impeach Paxton earlier this year.

Compare that to the Wisconsin GOP’s threats of impeaching Justice Janet Protasiewicz and you will quickly understand how insane and unprecedented what they are trying to do actually is. We spend the whole hour breaking down what the GOP is trying to do, how they could get away with it, and what it would mean for democracy in Wisconsin.

While many employers are now asking people to come in a certain number of days a week, hardly any are tracking exactly how long they stay. In most of the country, only about half of office visits now last for at least six hours at a time, according to WiFi data from Basking, a workplace occupancy analytics firm. That is in stark contrast to before the pandemic, when a majority of visits, 84 percent, lasted six hours or more.

Greg and Kristin have a discussion about whether or not the 9-5 is dead, the different between being an employee and an entrepreneur, and the importance of employers being explicit in whether they are paying for your output, your time or both.

Bullying in schools has shot up over the past five years, according to an annual survey by the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Kristin and Greg talk about whether or not bullying is actually getting worse or if kids are just reporting it more (which isn’t a bad thing).

The Good: Apparently, The Chicks have been performing a cover of Miley and Dolly’s Rainbowland in all of their shows since May.
The Bad: A white man armed with a high-powered rifle and a handgun killed three Black people at a Dollar General store in Jacksonville, Florida, on Saturday, before shooting himself, in what local law enforcement described as a racially motivated crime.
The Wasteful: France is about to spend about $216 million destroying nearly 80 million gallons of surplus wine, enough liquid to fill more than 100 Olympic-sized swimming pools, the Washington Post reported. The problem is that higher production costs and shrinking demand for vin have made it impossible for French wineries to sell their spiked grape juice for a profit, even if it does have tantalizing hints of oak and leather. The average French citizen drinks about 40 liters of wine per year, compared to 136 liters in 1926.

Killing Newspapers via Lawsuits (Hour 1)

A lawsuit against The Wausau Pilot and Review was dismissed in April but the small, independent paper is now dealing with mounting legal bills as the case is under appeal. GOP State Rep, Cory Tomczyk accused the paper of defamation after it reported he used a homophobic slur during a county board meeting Aug. 12th. The paper ran the story acting on a tip from a reader and with three individual sworn statements that Tomczyk did use the slur. A judge later ruled Tomczyk didn’t meet the legal standard to prove he was defamed. Now, Pilot owner Shereen Siewart says she doesn’t know how she’ll be able to pay for lawyers and her staff of 4. First Amendment experts say the case demonstrates how a single lawsuit can cripple an outlet in ways the law doesn’t intend.

And they will NOT be hosting an event at the Italian Community Center, which received backlash from the right for now hosting them. Whether you like it or not, with the RNC coming to Milwaukee in 2024, local businesses are going to open their doors (or not open their doors) to organizations that you may not agree with. We spend most of the first hour discussing what responsibility businesses have when it comes to hosting or not hosting controversial groups and whether or not it “fair” to boycott them when they do.

Trump the Mob Boss? (Hour 1)

In a sweeping indictment, President Trump and 18 others were accused of running a “criminal enterprise” in their efforts to overturn his loss in the 2020 presidential election in Georgia—language historically used to take down mob bosses.

According to the indictment, Trump and his allies, including his former personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani and former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, tried to interfere with the electoral college process through dozens of acts such as harassing election workers and, in one case, breaching voting equipment in Coffee County, GA.

For Trump, the frontrunner for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination, it’s his fourth indictment in five months.

Who Needs Recusal Rules? Wisconsin does. (Hour 1)

In the past there have been cases before the Wisconsin Supreme Court where one of the seven justices has had a conflict of interest. But in Wisconsin, there are no real rules dictating when a Supreme Court justice should recuse themselves from the case. They rely on the time tested “honor system” Can we agree that should change? But if it were to change, what should recusal standards include? We bring this up today because last week, Vos Robin Vos said that Justice Protasiewicz should recuse on redistricting cases or risk impeachment.

Former President Trump was indicted yesterday on federal charges over his efforts to subvert American democracy and overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, which he lost. It’s the third indictment brought against Trump, who now faces a total of 78 criminal counts and a $40 million (and growing) legal bill.

And yet, according to a a New York Times/Siena College poll released Monday, he is demolishing the field for the Republican nomination, leading second-place Ron DeSantis 54% to 17%.

The likelihood is high that he will be the Republican nominee and that despite everything, the general election could be very close. So… what’s your plan if he gets fairly re-elected?

Isn’t that just the definition of someone who works to live instead of living to work? And don’t both genders do that? False Equivalency: Nazis and Drag Shows (Hour 1)

An armed Neo-Nazi group protested a Pride in the Park event in Watertown, Wisconsin, on Saturday afternoon that featured a drag story time and drag shows. The Anti-Defamation League describes the Neo Nazi Group, Blood Tribe, as “Blood Tribe is a neo-Nazi group with semi-autonomous chapters in the United States and Canada. Blood Tribe promotes hardline white supremacist views and openly directs its vitriol at Jews, “non-whites” and the LGBTQ+ community.” Meanwhile, the group that organized the event, Unity Project of Watertown, describe itself and its mission as, “Unity Project of Watertown was created to bring awareness to social issues in the Watertown area. We welcome anyone as long as they are respectful of others. Our Mission Statement: ;To promote a sense of acceptance and belonging among all members of our community.’.”

Yet, a certain Wisconsin politician took to Twitter to basically condemn “both sides” (the tweet has since been deleted, but screenshots are forever).

Then we discuss the fact that Foxconn actually made something! And that Scott Walker is making almost $1 million a year to basically fail at bolstering the youth conservative movement.

So – are aliens and UFOs now being used as the distraction instead of the thing the government doesn’t want us to ask questions about?

Homosexuality is punishable by 20 years in prison in majority-Muslim Malaysia, which called Healy’s behavior “an insult” to the country’s laws. Was that activism or was he just being antagonistic while being a guest in another country?

Should Wisconsin Retirees be Tax Exempt? (Hour 1)

Two Republican lawmakers released a proposal Monday that promises to eliminate nearly all state taxes on retirement income for Wisconsin residents. Americans' Confidence in Higher Education Down (Hour 1)

A new Gallup Poll shows that Americans’ confidence in higher education has fallen to 36%, sharply lower than in two prior readings in 2015 (57%) and 2018 (48%). This past weekend marked the conservative organization Turning Point USA’s annual Young Women’s Leadership Summit. Which is an event that meant for high school and college age young women. Media Matters’ Madeline Peltz reported her time there and observed some variation of the same speech from the roster of conservative speakers imploring young attendees to give up their career aspirations and their birth control.

The Daily Wire’s Candace Owens literally wrapped up the convention by telling attendees, “Every ill that we are fighting right now in society has been brought forth by women.”

stop transgender women from participating in women’s sports,
ban gender-affirming medical care for transgender youth
allow psychologists to treat transgender kids for gender dysphoria
prevent outside people or groups from providing “readers” in schools or libraries, including drag queens, and taking funding away from agencies or groups that hold such events.
abolish the Wisconsin Elections Commission
require every county to use paper ballots only in elections

How do you feel about religious schools getting public money? Per the Supreme Court’s decision last summer, it’s legal for public money to go to religious schools but is it right? Especially when you find out that there is no state law protecting LGBTQ+ students from discrimination once enrolled in a voucher school. And the federal Title IX law exempts religious institutions from complying with the anti-discrimination law if it runs counter to their religious beliefs. Wisconsin Watch reviewed public materials for about one-third of the state’s 373 voucher schools and found that four out of 10 had policies or statements that appeared to target LGBTQ+ students for disparate treatment. Some had explicitly discriminatory policies, such as expelling students for being gay or transgender.
